SS. Nereo and Achilleo

The Church

The church grew on the site of the 4th century Oratory of the Fasciola, named from the bandage which is supposed to have fallen from the wounds of St Peter after his escape from the Mamertine prison. In 524 the oratory was transformed into a church by pope St John I, when he brought here the bodies of martyrs Nereus and Achilleus.

The church was reconstructed several times, in particular by St Leo III in 810 and by cardinal Cesare Baronio in 1597.

Interior has a nave and two aisles, the walls are decorated with the frescoes by Pomarancio, the triumphal arch is covered by 9th century mosaic representing Transfiguration. The church also contains a Cosmatesque choir, medieval ambo, a 15th century marble candlestick and etc. In front of a simple facade is a granite column with a cross. The church is assigned to the priests Philippinians of Vallicella.
