- The church was built in the 4th century over
the other ancient constructions. The convent of the church was
fortified and served as a fortress protecting the territory around
it. One tower still exists dominating the building of the convent,
which is now used as a Hospice of S.Margherita for old people.
- The church was returned to its Romanesque
forms by Antonio Munoz in 1930. Its interior represents a great
rectangular hall with the six little chapels on the sides and big
windows over them.
- In the floor are set numerous good 1st
century A.D. Roman black-and-white mosaics found in Rome in 1939.
The apse is decorated with a big mannerist painting of the 16th
century. Here were found the traces of the medieval frescoes
attributed to the school of P.Cavallini, and a burial monument of
bishop De Surdis with the Cosmatesque decorations brought here from
old St Peter's.
